## Formula

Epoch performance on day k = close k days after the epoch anchor / close on the anchor. Anchors: 2010-07-18 (first close of our history, for the 50 BTC epoch) and the halvings of 2012-11-28, 2016-07-09, 2020-05-11 and 2024-04-20. Each older epoch runs up to and including the next halving and is shifted so that its day 0 falls on 2024-04-20.

## How to read it

Every four years or so, after 210,000 blocks, the reward paid to miners for a new block is cut in half. Each line follows one of the periods between those cuts, called epochs, as a multiple of the close on the day it began: 100% is the halving-day close, 300% means price has tripled since. The older epochs are slid forward so that their halvings fall on 20 April 2024, the day of the latest one, and the time axis carries the dates of the current epoch. The first epoch had no halving to start from, so it begins with the first close in our history, on 18 July 2010.

Each epoch has climbed less than the one before. From the halving close, the 2012 epoch peaked at about 92 times in December 2013, the 2016 epoch at about 30 times in December 2017 and the 2020 epoch at about 7.9 times in November 2021; those peaks came 12 to 18 months after the halving. The current epoch has so far topped out at about 1.9 times, in October 2025, some 530 days in. Reading straight down from today's date compares the epochs at the same age: on 24 October 2026, 917 days in, the current epoch stood at 124%, against 194% for the 2020 epoch, 555% for 2016 and about 1,830% for 2012.

Unlike a chart anchored on cycle lows or peaks, the anchor here is a date fixed in advance by the protocol, so nothing in it depends on hindsight. That makes the comparison cleaner, but it does not show that halvings drive price; with four complete epochs, it is a record of what happened, not a forecast.

## Limitations

- Built from one daily close per day (Coin Metrics Community Data). Glassnode builds its price from a volume-weighted average across exchanges, so the multiples can differ slightly; recomputed from Bitstamp's daily closes for the epochs since 2012, ours differ by a median 0.4% (95% of days within 1.2%). The 50 BTC epoch has no independent check, since Bitstamp's history starts in August 2011.
- A halving happens at a block height, not at a set time; the day used is the UTC date of that block, and the close is the end of that day, a few hours to most of a day after the halving itself.
- The first epoch starts from a close of about $0.09 in July 2010, when trading was very thin, so its multiples (peaking near 340 times in June 2011) are far more sensitive to the exact starting price than the others. Glassnode also starts it at the beginning of its own price history, which may not be the same day.
- The time axis carries the current epoch's dates, so the older epochs, which lasted about 1,300 to 1,440 days, show their later days only as the current epoch reaches them.
- Four completed epochs are a small sample, and the current one is still running.
