Data cross-checked. Computed from the validated daily BTC close (111-day and 350-day simple moving averages). Price: cross-checked against Bitstamp daily BTC/USD close (independent exchange) (median difference 0.15% over 5,539 days (2011-08-18 to 2026-10-16); 95% of days within 1.79%). Checked 2026-10-17. Formula

111DMA = average of the last 111 daily closes. 350DMA x 2 = 2 x average of the last 350 daily closes. Indicator axis: 111DMA / (350DMA x 2); a crossing is the first day it reaches 1 after being below it.

How to read it

The indicator follows two smoothed versions of the Bitcoin price: a faster average over the last 111 days and a slower average over the last 350 days, which is then doubled. Both are drawn on the price axis, and their quotient is drawn on the indicator axis.

While the fast average stays below the doubled slow one, the quotient sits under 1. When a rally lifts the fast average up to the doubled slow average, the quotient reaches 1: price has run far ahead of its long-run trend. In Bitcoin's history this has happened four times, in April 2013, December 2013, December 2017 and April 2021, each close to a cycle peak.

It is a trend-stretch signal built only from price, with a handful of past events behind it, so it says nothing about timing within a cycle and may not repeat.

Limitations

  • Uses one daily close per day from Coin Metrics Community Data; providers that build the daily price from other exchanges or another closing hour can show slightly different averages and, near a crossing, a crossing date a day apart.
  • The quotient on the indicator axis is our own presentation of the same two averages; the original indicator is read from the two lines alone.
  • The first 349 days of price history have no 350-day average, so the chart starts in mid-2011.
  • Four past crossings are a small sample. The 111 and 350 day lengths were chosen with hindsight to fit earlier tops, so the signal can fail in future cycles.

Historical examples

Selected mechanically: the lowest and highest closed-day 111DMA / (350DMA x 2) in the available history (2011-07-02 to 2026-10-16). These are observations, not forecasts or trading signals.
