Formula

Vol_N = sample standard deviation of the last N daily log returns ln(close_t / close_t−1) × √365, for N = 7, 14, 30, 90, 180 and 365 calendar days (1W, 2W, 1M, 3M, 6M, 1Y). HYPE trades every day, so a year counts 365 returns. Ratio vs BTC = HYPE Vol_30 / BTC Vol_30 over the same 30 days. A value is shown only when every close of its window exists.

How to read it

Realized volatility measures how strongly HYPE's price has actually swung from day to day, expressed as a yearly figure. A reading of 80% means that daily swings of the size seen in the window, kept up for a year, would add up to a typical yearly move of about 80% in either direction (one standard deviation). It says nothing about the direction.

Each line looks back over a different window. The thin grey 1-week line reacts to single days and jumps around; the 1-month line is the main reading; the 3-month, 6-month and 1-year lines move slowly and show the longer regime. When the short lines climb above the long ones, the market has recently been more turbulent than usual; when they drop below, it has calmed down. The table and downloads also carry the 2-week window and HYPE's 1-month volatility divided by Bitcoin's over the same days.

Volatility only looks back: it describes swings that have already happened, not the ones to come, and it treats rises and falls alike.

Limitations

  • Glassnode builds its version from its own price aggregated across many exchanges; ours uses one reference close per day (Coin Metrics, 00:00 UTC). Swings inside a day are not counted, and readings can differ by a few points from other providers.
  • Recomputed with the same formula on Hyperliquid's own HYPE/USDC spot closes, the 1M line differs from ours by 1.7 points at the median (4.6 at the 95th percentile) and the 1Y line by 1.3 points (1.7); that single venue reads 0.6 to 1.3 points higher at the median. The 1W and 2W lines rest on a handful of days and can differ by 10 points or more in hectic weeks.
  • History starts on 2024-12-13, HYPE's first daily close in our price source. Each line starts once its window is full: the 1M line on 2025-01-12, the 6M line on 2025-06-11 and the 1Y line only on 2025-12-13.
  • Scaling by √365 assumes that daily swings are independent of each other. In strongly trending or choppy periods the yearly figure is a rough scale, not a forecast.
