Formula

730DMA = average of the last 730 daily closes. Upper band = 5 × 730DMA. Indicator axis: close / 730DMA. The first reading is on 2012-07-16, 730 days after our price history begins.

How to read it

The chart draws two slow reference lines under and over the Bitcoin price: the average of the last 730 daily closes, about two years of trading, and the same average multiplied by five. Both sit on the price axis. On the indicator axis we add how many times the close stands above its 2-year average; the solid line at 1 is the average itself and the dotted line at 5 is the upper band.

Most of Bitcoin's history has played out between the two lines. Closes under the 2-year average have tended to come in the depths of bear markets: on our closes, early 2015, late 2018, March 2020 and most of 2022, with the deepest reading, about 0.41, in November 2022. Closes above five times the average have only happened near the peaks of 2013 and 2017, when price reached roughly 18 and 10 times its average. The 2021 run topped out just under the band, near 4.9 in February.

Each cycle so far has reached a smaller multiple of the average than the one before, so the upper band may stay out of reach as the market grows. The lines move slowly and trail price, so the chart says where the market sits within its long-run range, not when a turn will come.

Limitations

  • Built from one daily close per day (Coin Metrics Community Data). Glassnode builds its price from a volume-weighted average across exchanges, so the lines can differ slightly; recomputed from Bitstamp's daily closes since 2015, our 2-year average differs by a median 0.03%.
  • The close-to-average ratio on the indicator axis is our own addition; the original tool is read from the two bands alone.
  • The first two years of price history serve only as the first window, so the chart starts in July 2012 and does not cover the 2011 peak.
  • The 730-day length and the multiple of five were picked by looking back at past cycles, and only two peaks have crossed the upper band, so the bands may not hold in future cycles.
