Formula

ATH = highest daily close from 2010-07-18 up to and including the day. Drawdown = close / ATH − 1, so 0% on a new high and −100% at a price of zero.

How to read it

Every day the chart compares the Bitcoin close with the highest close recorded up to that day. On a day that sets a new record the reading is 0%; otherwise it shows how much the price would have to fall from the peak to reach today's level. The record itself is drawn on the price axis as a staircase that only steps up.

Read across cycles, the troughs say how deep each bear market went: about 93% in late 2011, about 85% in January 2015, about 84% in December 2018 and about 77% in November 2022, each a little shallower than the one before. The dotted lines mark a loss of half and of four-fifths of the peak value.

A drawdown only looks backwards: it says how far price has fallen, not whether it will fall further or recover. Long stretches near 0% belong to bull markets that keep printing new highs.

Limitations

  • Built from one daily close per day (Coin Metrics Community Data). Glassnode does not say whether its all-time high uses daily closes, hourly prices or intraday highs; an intraday high would sit above our close high and make every drawdown a little deeper, by a few percentage points right after a sharp peak.
  • The all-time high is the record of our own price history, which starts on 2010-07-18; earlier trades are not included.
  • The all-time high column is our own addition to show which peak each reading is measured from.
  • Price-only and backward-looking: it describes how deep past declines went and says nothing about the next move.
