Formula

4yr CAGR = (close / close 1,461 days earlier)^(1/4) − 1. The 1,461-day window is four calendar years including one leap day; the first reading is on 2014-07-18, four years after our price history begins.

How to read it

For each day the chart takes the Bitcoin close and the close on the same date four years earlier, and asks: what steady yearly growth rate would turn the old price into today's price? A reading of 50% means that someone who bought exactly four years ago has, on average, grown their money by half again every year since.

Four years is roughly the length of one halving period and of one full bull-and-bear cycle, so every reading spans a whole cycle and the timing of the purchase inside it matters less than with shorter windows. Read over time, the line traces how Bitcoin's long-run returns have shrunk as the market grew: several hundred percent a year in 2014-2016 (close to 950% in July 2014), mostly between 50% and 200% from 2017 to 2021, and mostly between 10% and 60% since 2022. On our daily closes the line has never gone below zero; its lowest reading so far, about 7%, came in April 2025. The dotted line marks 100% a year, a doubling every year.

The value depends entirely on two single days, today and the base day four years back, so a sharp move on either date moves the reading. It describes what past holders earned; it is not a forecast of future returns.

Limitations

  • Built from one daily close per day (Coin Metrics Community Data). Glassnode builds its price from a volume-weighted average across exchanges, so individual readings can differ slightly, most of all in the thin markets of 2010-2012 that serve as the base for the first readings.
  • Glassnode describes a trailing four-year window but not how it handles leap days or missing days; we use exactly 1,461 days, which always lands on the same calendar date four years earlier.
  • Point to point: only the two end dates count, not the path in between, and returns are in US dollars, not adjusted for inflation.
  • The column with the close four years earlier is our own addition, to show which base price each reading is measured from.
