Formula

Price = the BTC/USD reference close of each UTC day, as published by Coin Metrics Community Data (no further transformation). One value per calendar day from 2010-07-18.

How to read it

This is the plainest chart on the site: one point per day, the dollar price at which Bitcoin closed that day, from the first exchange quotes in July 2010 to yesterday. Every other market-cycle chart here is built on top of this same series.

The axis is logarithmic, so equal vertical distances mean equal percentage moves. That is what lets eight cents and a six-figure price share one picture, and it shows each cycle's run-up and bear market at a comparable size instead of flattening the early years into a line along the floor.

A closing price is a snapshot taken once a day. It hides the swings inside the day, and the exact level can differ by a fraction of a percent between data vendors that close the day at slightly different moments or weigh exchanges differently.

Limitations

  • Glassnode builds its price from a volume-weighted average across centralised and decentralised exchanges with its own outlier filtering; ours is Coin Metrics' daily reference close. The two methods agree closely but are not identical, especially in the thin markets of 2010-2012.
  • One value per day: intraday highs and lows are not shown, so daily peaks and crashes look smaller than they felt in real time.
  • The history starts on 2010-07-18, when regular exchange trading began; earlier, informal trades are not included.
  • Prices are in US dollars, not adjusted for inflation.
