200DMA = average of the last 200 daily closes. Mayer Multiple = close / 200DMA. Bands on the price axis: 0.8 × 200DMA and 2.4 × 200DMA. The first reading is on 2011-02-02, 200 days after our price history begins.
The Mayer Multiple compares each day's Bitcoin close with the average of the last 200 closes, a little over six months of trading. A reading of 1 means price sits exactly on that average, 2 means twice as high, 0.5 means half. On the price axis we draw the 200-day average itself together with two bands, 0.8 and 2.4 times the average, the levels Trace Mayer proposed for stretched-low and stretched-high conditions; on the indicator axis the same three levels appear as dotted lines under the multiple.
Most days fall between the bands: on our closes since February 2011, about 6% of days closed above 2.4 times the average and about 17% below 0.8 times. The stretches above the upper band cluster around the euphoric phases of 2011, 2013, late 2017 and early 2021, with readings of about 13 in June 2011, 6.5 in November 2013, 3.8 in December 2017 and 2.8 in January 2021. Closes under the lower band arrived in the deep sell-offs: late 2011 (as low as 0.23), January 2015 (0.40), December 2018 (0.51), March 2020 (0.57) and June 2022 (0.48). Price has not closed above the upper band since March 2021; the highest reading of the current cycle was about 1.85, in March 2024.
Because the window is only 200 days, the average catches up with price within months, so the multiple drifts back toward 1 even when a trend carries on, and it flags how stretched the market is rather than where a turn will be. Each cycle has reached a lower peak multiple than the one before, which suggests the upper band may matter less as the market grows.
